We are excited about being pen pals with the Kindergarten students at Scales Elementary School in Williamson County. This is the 9th year of being “Kinderfriends” with them. We will be exchanging pictures, letters and art work throughout the year. They will be visiting us at Warner in December and we will go see them in May.
Thanks to all our parents for helping us have such a smooth opening of school. Our children could not do as well as they do without your help and support.
First Grade
Our first grade students are off to a great start in the new school year. Each day finds them busy learning to read, how to write their names correctly, and counting. They will be learning about solids and liquids this month with the help of a Hands on Science kit. They enjoy going to P.E. and exercising to be healthy with Mr. Crawford. Ms. Crenshaw is helping them learn how to draw people in Art. The students enjoy games in their musical experience with Mrs. Roberts. The first graders interviewed agreed that this year is a little harder than Kindergarten, but still as much fun.
Second Grade
Welcome to 2nd Grade. We are off to a good start with your children. We have completed all our initial reading assessments and are working with your children at their instructional reading level in small groups every day. Any child who needs additional assistance to help them bring their reading up to 2nd grade level is also in extra tutoring groups throughout the day.
Some of the Reading skills we will be covering in September are:
Main Idea
Making Predictions
Making Connections
Sequencing
The two (2) most important Math skills for the month of September are:
Addition (using doubles, adding 3 numbers {2+4+3}, addition with 10 {10+4}, counting up)
Subtraction (from 20 or less, counting back, comparing pictures, input/output charts)
In Science we will be learning and participating in experiments with Changes in solids, liquids and gases (water, ice, freezing, melting, evaporation, mixing, temperature)
Friday, September 22 is the end of the 6 weeks. Report Cards will come home on October 2.
TARDIES are counted after 8:00 in the morning. More importantly, your child is missing out on learning opportunities. We have the pledge of allegiance and announcements at 8:00 and by 8:05 we are already into our reading lesson. Breakfast is served from 7:30-7:50!
Remember, READING WITH YOUR CHILD AT HOME is one the most important ways you can help him or her become a proficient and happy reader!
Third Grade
Third graders have started the year off with a “bang!” We have been working very hard to cover the standards this six weeks. In math, we’ve been working on place value of numbers all the way to the ten thousands place. In language, we’ve been learning about sentences and how to write them well. We have also been learning about plants and how they can make their own food in their leaves. We even planted our own seeds! We will observe their growth and log our observations. We are being scientists.
Fourth Grade
The 4th grade students of Ms. Moore and Mr. Sherman have had a great start to the new school year. The students have found this level to be fun and interesting. Their study of space has been especially interesting with the recent announcement that Pluto is no longer considered a planet. They have also learned about the phases of the moon. The students have been learning how to write complete sentences and outlines in addition to rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, and 1000. In the coming weeks the students will begin an extensive unit on Tennessee that will include history, famous people, and geography.
